యయాతి, దేవయానిల వివాహం

ఒక రోజు రాక్షసరాజు వృషపర్వుని కూతురు శర్మిష్ట, గురువు గారి కూతురు దేవయానితో, తన వెయ్యి మంది పరిచారికలతో విహారానికి అడవికి వెళ్ళింది. అక్కడ ఒక కొలనులో అందరూ బట్టలు విప్పి గట్టున పెట్టి జలకాలాడుతున్నారు. ఇంతలో గట్టిగా సుడిగాలి వీచింది. ఆ గాలికి గట్టు మీద పెట్టిన బట్టలన్ని కలిసిపొయాయి. 

తరువాత శర్మిష్ట, దేవయాని, మిగిలిన పరిచారికలు కొలనులొ నుండి బయటకు వచ్చారు. బట్టలన్ని కలిసిపోవడంతో, దేవయాని బట్టలు శర్మిష్ట వేసుకుంది. కాని శర్మిష్ట బట్టలు మాత్రం దేవయాని వేసుకొలేదు. 

"నేను నీ తండ్రికి గురువుగారైన శుక్రుని కూతిరిని, బ్రాహ్మణ కులంలో పుట్టిన కన్యను. నీవు విడిచిన మలిన వస్త్రాలను వేసుకుంటానా" అని అడిగింది.
దానికి శర్మిష్టకు కొపం వచ్చి "నీ తండ్రి నా తండ్రిని సేవిస్తూ ఆశీర్వదిస్తూ బతికే ఒక బ్రాహ్మణుడు. ఆ బ్రాహ్మణుడి కూతురివి నువ్వు గొప్పదానివా? నీవు విడిచిన వస్త్రం నేను కట్టుకోగా లేనిది, నేను విడిచిన వస్త్రం నువ్వు కట్టుకోవా?" అని నిందించి, దేవయానిని ఒక పాడుబడ్డ నూతిలో తోసింది. తరువాత తన పరిచారికలతో వెళ్ళిపోయింది. 

యయాతి మహారాజు అదే అడవికి వేటకు వచ్చాడు. నీతి కోసం ఆ బావి దగ్గరకు వచ్చాడు. బావిలో ఏడుస్తున్న దేవయానిని చూచాడు. తన చేతిని అందించి పైకి లాగాడు. దేవయాని పైకి వచ్చింది.
"వనితా, నీవు ఎవరు? ఈ నూతిలో ఎందుకు పడ్డావు?" అని అడిగాడు.
దానికి దేవయాని "మహారాజా, నా పేరు దేవయాని, రాక్షస గురువైన శుక్రాచార్యుల వారి పుత్రికను. ప్రమాద వశాత్తు ఈ బావిలో పడ్డాను. నీ దయ వలన పైకి వచ్చాను" అని బదులు చెప్పింది. తరువాత యయాతి తన నగరానికి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు. 

ఇంతలో దేవయాని పరిచారిక ఘార్ణిక, దేవయానిని వెదకుచూ అక్కడికి వచ్చింది. దేవయాని పరిచారికను చూచి "నేను వృషపర్వుడి నగరానికి రాను. నువ్వు వెళ్ళి నా తండ్రితో నాకు శర్మిష్ట చేసిన అవమానము తెలుపుము" అని చెప్పి పంపింది.
ఈ విషయం తెలిసిన శుక్రుడు వెంటనే దేవయాని ఉన్న చోటుకు వచ్చాడు. "అమ్మా దేవయాని, నీకు కోపం తగదమ్మా. ఎన్నో యజ్ఞాలుం, యాగాలు చేసిన వారికంటె, కోపం లేనివాడే గొప్పవాడమ్మా. ఇతరులు మన మీద కోపించినా, అవమానించినా, దానిని మనసులో పెట్టుకోకుండా స్నేహంగ ఉండటమే పరం ధర్మం అమ్మా. కాబట్టి కోపం బుద్ధిమంతులకు తగదు. శర్మిష్ట నీ కంటే వయసులో చిన్నది. దానితో నీకేమిటి. ఇంటికి పోదాము రామ్మా" అన్నాడు శుక్రుడు. 

శుక్రుడు ఎంత చెప్పినా దానికి దేవయాని ఒప్పుకోలేదు. "నాకు అవమానం జరిగిన చోట నేను ఉండను. వేరే ఎక్కడికన్నా వెళతాను" అని అన్నది. "అమ్మా నువ్వు లేకుండా నేను కూడా ఈ నగరంలో ఉండలేను నేను కూడా నీ వెంటనే ఉంటాను" అన్నాడు శుక్రుడు.
ఇంతలో ఈ విషయం తెలుసుకున్న వృషపర్వుడు వెంటనే వారి వద్దకు వచ్చాడు. "గురుదేవా, నీ దయచేతనే కదా మా రాక్షసజాతి అంతా బతుకుతున్నది. లేకపోతె మేము అందరం మరణించవలసిన వారమే కదా. మీకు ఏమి కావాలో అడగండి" అని ప్రాధేయపడ్డాడు.
శుక్రుడు దేవయాని మొహం చూసాడు. దేవయాని వృషపర్వునితో " నీ కూతురు శర్మిష్ట, ఆమె వెయ్యి మంది పరిచారికలు ఈ రోజు నుండి నాకు పరిచారికలుగా ఉండాలి" అని చెప్పింది. వృషపర్వుడు దానికి ఒప్పుకున్నడు. అప్పటి నుండీ చక్రవతి కుమార్తె శర్మిష్ట, సుక్రుని కూతురైన దేవయానిని సేవిస్తూ ఉంది. 

ఒక రోజు దేవయాని, శర్మిష్టతఒ, మిగిలిన పరిచారికలతో, అదే వనానికి విహారానికి వెళ్ళింది. మరల యయాతి మహారాజు వచ్చాడు. దేవయానిని చూసి "బలా, ఇదివరకు నిన్ను చూసాను. వీరంతా ఎవరు?" అని అడిగాడు.
దేవయాని "మహారాజా, నీనెవరో మీకు తెలియును. ఈమె పేరు శర్మిష్ట, వృషపర్వుని కుమార్తె, నా దాసి. మిగిలిన వారందరూ నా పరిచారికలు. రాజా, నేను నూతిలో పడ్డప్పుడు నువూ నీ చేతిని అందించి, నన్ను బయటకు లాగావు. అప్పుడే మనకు ప్రాణిగ్రహణమైనది. అందుకని నీవు నన్ను వివాహమాడుము. ఈ శర్మిష్టతో సహా వెయ్యి మంది పరిచారికలతో నిన్ను సేవిస్తూ ఉంటాము" అని చెప్పింది. 

దానికి యయాతి "బాలా, ఇది ధర్మము కాదు. బ్రాహ్మణులు క్షత్రియ కన్యను వివాహమాడవచ్చు కాని, క్షత్రియుడు బ్రాహ్మణ కన్యను వివాహమాడరాదు. రాజునైన నేనే అధర్మము చేసిన మిగిలిన వారు కూడా ధర్మము తప్పరా. అందుకూని ఈ వివాహము జరుగదు" అని అన్నాడు.

"యయాతి మహారాజా, నా తండ్రి శుక్రాచార్యుడు, లోకానికి ధర్మాధర్మ నిర్ణయం చేసేవాడు. ఆయన చెపితే ఒప్పుకుంటారా" అని అడిగింది.
దానికి యయాతి "ఆ మహానుభావుడు వచ్చి ఇది ధర్మ విరుద్ధము కాదు అని చెప్పిన నేను నిన్ను తప్పక వివాహమాడెదను" అని అన్నాడు. 

కన్న కూతురి మీద ప్రేమ శుక్రుని ఆ వివాహానికి అంగీకరింపచేసింది. "యయాతితో జరిగే ఈ వివాహము అధర్మము కాదు" అని చెప్పాడు.
యయాతి సంతోషంగా దేవయానిని వివామాడటానికి ఒప్పుకున్నాడు. ఇరువురికి వివాహం జరిగింది. యయాతి తన నగరానికి వెళ్ళడానికి సన్నద్ధం అయ్యాడు.
శుక్రుడు శర్మిష్టను చూపించి "ఈమె వృషపర్వుని కూతురు శర్మిష్ట. అందరి పరిచారికల మాదిరి కాకుండా ఈమెకు ఆహారము, పానీయము, అలంకారాలు మాత్రం ఇవ్వు. పడక సుఖం మాత్రం ఇవ్వవాద్దు" అని చెప్పాడు. యయాతి సరే అన్నాడు. 

యయాతి తన భార్య అయిన దేవయానిని తీసుకొని, శర్మిష్ట, మిగిలిన పరిచారికలతో సహా తన నగరానికి వెళ్ళాడు. దేవయానిని అంతఃపురంలో ఉంచాడు. శర్మిష్టను, పరిచారికలను వేరే గృహంలో ఉంచాడు. దేవయానితో సకల భోగాలు అనుభవిస్తున్నాడు. వారికి యదువు, తుర్వసుడు అనే కొడుకులు పుట్టారు.

Marriage of Yayati and Devayani

One day Sharmishta, the daughter of the demon Taurus, went to the forest for a picnic with Devyani, the daughter of Guru Gary, with her thousand maids. There, in a pool, everyone was undressing and bathing. Meanwhile a strong tornado blew. All the clothes that were put on the embankment were blown away by that wind.

Sharmishta got angry and said, "Your father is a Brahmin who lives by serving and blessing my father. Are you great, daughter of that Brahmin? I can not wear the cloth you left, can you tie the cloth I left?" Blamed and pushed Devyani into an abandoned nostril. Then left with his maids.

Yayati Maharaja came hunting in the same forest. He came to that well for justice. He saw Devyani crying in the well. He offered his hand and pulled up. Devyani came up.

"Vanitha, who are you? Why did you fall into this trap?" He asked.

Devyani replied, "Maharaja, my name is Devyani, the daughter of the demon guru Shukracharya. I fell into this well by accident. I came up by your grace." Yaati then left for his city.

Meanwhile, Devyani's maid Gharnika came there in search of Devyani. Devyani looked at the maid and said, "I will come to the city of Taurus. You go and tell me the insult you have done to my father."

Knowing this, Venus immediately came to the place where the goddess was. "Amma Devayani, do you deserve anger? Do you have a great deal of anger over those who have performed many rituals and sacrifices? Even if others are angry or insulting us, the param dharma is to be friendly without keeping it in mind. Yaati said, "Bala, this is not Dharma. Brahmins can marry a Kshatriya virgin, but a Kshatriya should not marry a Brahmin virgin.

"Yayati Maharaja, my father Shukracharya, is the one who decides Dharmadharma to the world. Would you agree if he said so?"

To which Yaati said, "I must not marry you if that nobleman comes and says it is not immoral."

Love on Kanna's daughter Venus agreed to the marriage. "This marriage with Yayati is not unrighteous," he said.

Yaati happily agreed to marry Devyani. The two were married. Yaati was getting ready to go to his city.

Venus pointed at Sharmishta and said, "She is the daughter of Taurus Sharmishta. Unlike all the maids, do not give her food, drink or decorations. Do not give her bed comfort." Yaati said OK.

Yaati took his wife Devyani and went to his city with Sharmishta and the rest of the maids. Devayani was kept in the harem. He put Sharmishta and the maids in a different house. Enjoying all the pleasures with Devyani. They had two sons, Yaduvu and Thurvasudu.
